Salish Sea Judo was founded Eric Lee-Mӓder (third degree black belt), who began Judo training in the early 1990s, eventually becoming an assistant instructor at Portland Judo, the largest Judo club in the United States. He has trained at the Kodokan in Tokyo, competed in a World Masters Judo event, and cross-trained in Danzan Ryu and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Professor Steve Maxwell (6th degree black belt) is our jiu-jitsu instructor-in-residence. Steve was the first American certified to teach Gracie jiu-jitsu in the U.S., and is a multi-time Pan American jiu-jitsu champion. He is an internationally famous fitness coach, physical educator, and combatives instructor to various agencies including the DEA and the Secret Service. Steve teaches traditional Gracie jiu-jitsu self-defense several Saturdays each month.
Mike Schmitt (first degree black belt) assists with instruction. Mike has practiced Judo since the 1980s, with cross training in Enshin karate, Tomiki Aikido, Danzan Ryu and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Leigh O'Connor (brown belt) has an extensive background in grappling, including Brazilian jiu-Jitsu. He co-instructs both youth and adult classes.
We're further supported by a great cohort of advanced student members with years of Judo and jiu-jitsu experience.
